UUS VANA TEATER
UUS VANA TEATER – it is theatre. The same theatre that was born in Ancient times, became commedia dell'arte in the medieval time and developed with Shakespeare, Moliere, Goethe, Tchekhov... It is the traditions of that classical theatre, old and yet new at the same time, that we pursue to continue.
UUS VANA TEATER (literally NEW OLD THEATRE) was founded by Vahur-Paul Põldma, a young Estonian actor who graduated from the Estonian Institute of Humanities in 2001. Among his previous roles, Smirnov in “The Bear” by Anton Tchekhov and Tartuffe in “Tartuffe” by Moliere could be mentioned. When he discovered the monologue "Novecento" by Alessandro Baricco in February 2002, he found inspiration in it and translated it into Estonian. After the premiere in Tartu on 13 June 2002, he has been performing the monologue in small halls all over Estonia. In Tallinn, so far the monologue has been played in the form of café theatre. At our café in Vene Street 6, at the premises of “The Master`s Courtyard,” you can find the best coffees and chocolates.
The first season of the UUS VANA TEATER was successful. In March 2003 the theatre left for Napoli to look for new repertoire and perform "Novecento" for Estonian communities abroad. In May we are going to give performances in Austria, Germany, France and Greece. Next year we are planning to make a tour in America.
The goal of the UUS VANA TEATER is to enrich the scene of the Estonian theatre with classical and contemporary Italian and French drama which, unfortunately, is not very well known in Estonia. We would be grateful to all who would be willing to help us by indicating to us drama texts which would be worth staging.
